What steps should I take when water damage occurs?

DO remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.

DO remove wet insulation and start dehumidifier.

DO turn on air conditioning for maximum drying in summer; in winter heat area to approximately 74-76 degrees and operate dehumidifier until dry.

DO remove or prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.

DO wipe up excess from wood furniture after removal of lamps and table-top items.
-
DO put aluminum foil, china saucers or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.

DO remove Orientals or other colored rugs from wet wall - to -wall carpeting.
-
DO remove valuable paintings and art objects to a safe place.

DO open drawers and cabinet doors for complete drying.

DO blot wet carpeting with clean white towels.

DON'T attempt to use any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water.

DON'T turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, wiring may be wet of damaged. Keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

DON'T leave wet fabrics in place, dry as quickly as possible. Hang furs and leather goods to dry seperately at room temperature.

DON'T leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors.

DON'T use TV's or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, particularly on wet concrete floors.
